Beneath Kashi: The Underground Temple of Vaaraahi Devi

Most people visiting Varanasi head straight to the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple, walk along the ghats, and soak in the spiritual energy of the city. But not many know that just a short walk from there, near Manmandir Ghat, lies a mystical underground temple dedicated to Vaaraahi Devi — a powerful and protective form of the Divine Mother.

This temple is small and hidden, but it holds immense spiritual significance, especially in the Srividya tradition.

Who is Vaaraahi Devi?

Vaaraahi Devi is one of the Ashta Matrikas — the eight divine mother goddesses — and is known as the commander-in-chief of Goddess Lalitha Tripura Sundari’s army. While Lakshmi Devi brings in auspiciousness and wealth, Vaaraahi clears what blocks it. She removes inauspicious energies, negativity, and obstacles that hold us back in life.

In the Srividya path, she is known for her ability to transform inner and outer struggles — whether it’s disturbed relationships, long-term illness, legal battles, or a lack of peace. Vaaraahi doesn’t just solve problems; she helps you grow stronger from within.

A Temple That Few Know About

The Vaaraahi Devi Temple in Kashi isn’t like the grand temples you usually visit. It’s underground — quiet, mystical, and tucked away from the busy streets. Located about 700 meters from the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, it’s easy to miss unless you know what you’re looking for.

Here’s what makes it even more special — the temple is open for darshan only two hours a day, from 5:30 am to 7:30 am. And during that time, only the temple priests go down into the sanctum to offer the morning rituals. Vaaraahi Devi is bathed, adorned, and worshipped during the sacred Brahma Muhurta — the pre-dawn hour that’s considered most spiritually charged.

As a devotee, you won’t be able to go inside, but you can catch a glimpse of her face and feet through two small openings in the roof. Even that short darshan leaves a lasting impression.

Why Do People Seek Vaaraahi’s Blessings?

In Srividya Upasana, Vaaraahi mantra saadhana is known to bring deep transformation. It’s often recommended for:

  • Long-standing physical or emotional issues
  • Marital or family conflicts
  • Legal struggles or obstacles in career
  • Anxiety, restlessness, or lack of clarity
  • Spiritual protection and inner strength

However, this isn’t a mantra you pick up randomly. It is advised to take proper Deeksha (initiation) from a Srividya Guru before beginning this saadhana. With right guidance and devotion, her mantra becomes a powerful force of protection and peace.

She Who Guards the City of Light

In Varanasi, Vaaraahi Devi is also worshipped as the Kshetra Paalika, the protector of the sacred land, along with Lord Kalabhairava. Because she resides underground and works with deep transformative energies, she is lovingly referred to as PataaLa Bhairavi.

Her presence is quiet but powerful — like an invisible shield guarding the spiritual essence of Kashi.

A Quiet Encounter with the Divine

If you find yourself in Varanasi, visit this powerful temple of Vaaraahi Devi. You don’t need a long ritual or elaborate prayer — just being there during those quiet morning hours is an experience in itself.

Sometimes, it’s not the loudest places that touch your soul, but the still ones. Vaaraahi Devi’s temple is one such place — a sacred space that whispers strength, protection, and grace.

Location:

Vaaraahi Devi Temple  is near Manmandir Ghat, about 700 meters from the Kasi Viswanath temple.
